Gina McKlveen

Spotlight of the Month

Law & Art presents art made by lawyers from around the world, and turns the spotlight on one new lawyer artist each month. This October, discover the pieces of Gina McKlveen, family law specialist by day, and painter by night.

Gina's Story

From the moment Gina picked up a paintbrush as a child, she knew art was for her. Inspired by the strength of the women in her own family, particularly her maternal and paternal grandmothers, Gina draws her ideas from key events in her life, messages she feels inclined to share, or thoughts she is processing. Some of her work includes social commentary, where she will use popular references or events to convey her own perspective through a painting. When asked about her inspiration, Gina simply explains: "One of my favorite artist quotes and the one I resonate with the most is by Georgia O'Keeffe who said: 'I found I could say things with color and shape that I couldn't say any other way — things I had no words for'."

As an attorney and an artist, Gina has had to learn to juggle both hats: "I have yet to find the proper balance between art and law and I often find myself questioning which title I should put first, and which career should take precedence in my overall life. My catch phrase to encapsulate this personal dilemma is: 'Artist turned lawyer or lawyer turned artist? You be the judge'. One thing I am aiming to do as an artist and attorney is raising the credibility of treating art as a profession, rather than a hobby. I’d like to someday say that art is my job and law is my hobby, to legitimize becoming an artist as a viable career path that has just as much value to our society as other professionals."
