Salome's Story

Salome Coker was a lawyer for a decade. She then became a lawyer-artist. She is now a full-time artist, whose legal past deeply influences her artistic perspective, prompting her to explore themes of play, spontaneity, memory, and movement.

multidisciplinary artist, Salome's practice bridges continents and disciplines, creating a bold visual language drawn from Lagos, Salvador de Bahia, and  London—cities where she has lived and worked. Currently based in London, her work encompasses painting, printmaking, illustration, and performance. When asked about her artistic journey, Salome explains:

"I discovered painting almost serendipitously. While organising my garage, I stumbled upon my high school art bag containing acrylic paints, brushes, chalk pastels, and an untouched sketchpad. That same afternoon, I made a date with creativity. The sun was shining as I sat in my garden, laid out the contents of the bag, and started to paint. 'The Gathering' (2017) was the first piece that truly excited me to share my work; it possesses an ephemeral, dreamlike quality, as if reconstructing a memory.

I moved to my first studio space in 2020. Before then, I was painting at home on my dining room table (sometimes the floor). Lockdown made it apparent that I needed a dedicated space where I could instantly get into the zone without the distractions of household life. I found a studio ten minutes away from home. It was a corner of a shared office space with a green jellybean desk and three floating shelves. The space was limited, but with a few tools and materials laid out and my favourite things around me, I created some of my most inspired work."

Salome has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. Notable group exhibitions include the New English Art Club (NEAC) Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London (2022), the Sonsoles Print Studio Group Exhibition at the Gerald Moore Gallery, London (2021), and the Westfield Black Emerging Artist Exhibition, London (2020). Her solo exhibitions have been held at Slaughter and May (2024), PwC (2023), and CMS (2023).
