Tanya's Story
Tanya was a marketing and advertising lawyer for twenty years before she became a
full-time professional artist. “When I reflect on my entire body of work, from childhood to today", explains Tanya, "I see a person who deeply respects beauty but tests limits with subtle force.”
Tanya studied art throughout high school and dreamed of a creative career. Having
many interests, she pursued science and then law. “Whenever I need to ground myself, I turn to art. It’s a safehouse in a chaotic world. I enjoy the taste of challenge (“Can I paint this idea? Can I capture this emotion?”) and I relish the calm of focussed attention.”
Tanya’s artistic process typically begins with an idea that piques her interest on an
intellectual level. “My imagination plays with a visual representation of the idea, and I observe my emotional response to it. When I decide to bring the image to life, I carefully select music that will conjure the memories, thoughts, and feelings I want to explore at the canvas. I start painting with a loose plan but leave plenty of room for spontaneity and iteration. I find so much joy in the process itself, even though it’s not easy. As I push my technical skills and take risks, I ride waves of tough emotions until they gently wash away. Time bends in flow.”
Tanya creates art for herself, for its own sake. “I connect with myself when I paint. I
listen to my intuition without judgment and exercise discernment without justification. My choices belong to me. The memory of my art making process is forever mine.” In sharing her art, Tanya seeks connection with others. “It’s deeply satisfying when people tell me what my art means to them. I am always delighted when someone falls in love with a painting and must have it."
